What is Designated Interpreting?

Designated Interpreting is a discipline of American Sign Language interpreting services where interpreters work in partnership with Deaf business professionals in the social settings of the workplace to ensure equity in participation while meeting accessibility needs.

A Designated Interpreter is a skilled interpreter who works on a consistent basis with a Deaf Professional in their specific role and work environment. The Designated Interpreter learns the Deaf Professional’s communication preferences, role, and career intentions which results in accurate representation and efficient communication. Designated Interpreters work with Deaf Professionals to provide interpreting services in a business environment where accurate representation and efficient communication are critical to meeting the desired outcome.

Some examples of Deaf Professionals' positions are: Doctors, nurses, professors, administrators, contractors, managers/ supervisors, advisors, government political representatives, executives, entrepreneurs, and many more.
